Elizabeth put down the ski gloves she was looking at and began to giggle. "Enid," she whispered, tapping her friend gently on the arm. "Look at that couple over there!"

Enid followed her friend's gaze and chuckled. The middle-aged couple were staggering under mounds of packages. From the expressions on their faces, it was apparent they were in trouble. Things were slipping out of their arms, and any minute their expensive purchases were going to crash to the floor.

"Let's help them," Enid said, still smiling. Without a word Elizabeth crossed the floor of the brightly lit shop with her friend. Enid caught a ski pole just as it was about to fall, and Elizabeth grabbed an oversize package the woman was fumbling for.

"Thanks," the man said gratefully. He smiled sheepishly at his wife. "Guess you can tell we're not exactly experienced skiers."

Elizabeth fought hard to keep a straight face. "Do you need some help carrying this stuff out to your car?" she asked politely.

The couple thanked them both but insisted they'd be able to manage. Watching the couple lug their loot to the door, Enid and Elizabeth exchanged merry glances. The minute the couple had vanished, the girls both doubled up with laughter.

"Did you see the look on her face?" Elizabeth asked weakly, wiping her eyes.

"They both looked so confused." Enid giggled. "Liz, do you think they're going to be up at Tahoe this weekend, too?"

Elizabeth shook her head, her blond ponytail swinging. "I hope not. We'd better take out special insurance if they are!"

"I know I've already said so a million times, but I just can't wait to get up there, Liz. We're going to have the best time!"

Elizabeth smiled. "We sure are. I'm excited about the weekend, too." Elizabeth didn't say it aloud, but she couldn't help the uneasy thought that crossed her mind. I'd be even more excited if it were just going to be Enid and her aunt and me. She couldn't remember the last time she had laughed so hard as she had just now with Enid. It felt like ages! But it had been only weeks, she told herself. Since before Amy moved in.

A few minutes later Elizabeth began to regret her negative feelings about Amy. What kind of friend am I, anyway? she reprimanded herself, heading back to the counter and picking up the gloves she had been looking at.

"I think I'm going to get these," Enid said, picking up a pair of navy quilted gloves filled with goose down. "They're on sale, too."

Elizabeth nodded, then looked closely at a pair of lipstick-red gloves she had spotted on the counter. They weren't as practical as the navy ones. She knew that they would get dirty much more quickly, and they were almost twice the price of the gloves Enid had picked out. "Do you think Amy would like these?" she asked tentatively, showing them to Enid.

Enid thought for a moment. "Yes," she said judiciously. "They look like her color."

Elizabeth nodded. "She really likes bright things.
